CLEVELAND — Edward C. Taylor, a leader in Mennonite urban-ministry programs for a decade in the 1970s and '80s, died Aug. 24 at the age of 83.
He was ready to see the Mennonite church grow in urban areas. "We must not be afraid to proclaim that Christ is in our midst and is calling us to a different lifestyle and commitment," he said in the April 1979 issue of Sent, a mission magazine.
He also was an advocate for minority groups, especially in areas of church leadership.
Taylor was born July 1, 1923, in Dublin Ga. His family soon moved to Cleveland, where he lived and worked until his death.
He became a Christian at age 26. through a Cleveland citywide youth program he met Vern Miller, then pastor at Lee Heights Community Church. In 1976 Taylor and Miller worked together to establish Cleveland Heights Mennonite Church.
