Mrs. Emil R. Riesen was taken in death on March 11, 1948. The cause was designated by medical science as arterial sclerosis and clotures within the muscles of the heart. Memorial services were held on March 15 in the First Congregational church of Tucson, Arizona. Her body was laid to rest in Evergreen Cemetery of that city.

Mrs. Riesen was born Rachel Rebecca Penner, the eldest daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Heinrich D. Penner at Hillsboro, Kansas, on June 28, 1885. She attended public schools in Lehigh, Newton and Hillsboro, also her father's Vorbereitungs-Schule in Hillsboro and the Bethel College Academy at Newton, Kansas, where she was graduated in 1906.
