John H. Shetter, son of the late Isaac L. and Barbara (Huber) Shetter, was born near Chambersburg, Pa., Aug 24, 1869. He died in his sleep at the home of his son, Paul E. Shetter, July 15, 1959, after a short illness. He reached the age of 89 years, 10 months, and 21 days. | |||
On Dec. 4, 1894, he was united in marriage to Lizzie Burkhart, who preceded him in death on June 21, 1929. | |||
Seven children were born to this union, all surviving: Ruth, Mrs. Geo. L. Brubaker, Gap, Pa., Ada, Mrs. Roy C. Yeager, Chambersburg, Pa., Emma, Mrs. Harry S. Wadel, Shippensburg, Pa., Eber H., Ronks, Pa., Cora, Mrs. Ambrose Patterson, Upper Strasburg, Pa., Anna, Mrs. Paul B. Byers, Sheldon, Wisc., and Paul E., Chambersburg, Pa. Among the survivors are also 32 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren; one brother, jacob H., Havertown, Pa., and one sister, Fannie H. Burkholder, Manheim, Pa. One brother and 11 grandchildren preceded him in death. | |||
As a young man in 1892 he united with the Chambersburg Mennonite Church. When the Pleasant View Mennonite Church was built in 1909 he became a charter member. He attended regularly until a year or two ago, when his hearing failing him. He was a man much loved for his quiet and humble ways. To his children and grandchildren he left an impressive testimony. | |||
Funeral services were held at the Chambersburg church on July 18, 1959, conducted by Walter H. Lehman and Harvey E. Shank. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery. | |||
