SIMON G. BUCHER

Bishop Simon G. Bucher, 85, of the Mennonite Home, Lancaster, Pa., formerly of R. 4, Lebanon, Pa., died at the home on July 6, 1972 after an illness of four years.

He was ordained a deacon in 1916 and a minister in 1919. In 1926, he was elected to elder in the Church of the Brethren. He transferred to the Mennonite Church in 1938 and was elected bishop of Lebanon and Cumberland Counties in 1940. His See included churches in Florida and Alabama. He retired in 1968.

He served on the board at Philhaven Hospital and was assistant moderator of the Lancaster Mennonite Conference for many years. He sponsored several children by giving foster children a home and others a hand in beginning a new life.

His survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Harnish Bucher, of the Mennonite Home; a foster daughter, Elsie, wife of Emerson Snavely, of Lebanon; two foster sons, Rev. John Shuman, of Lebanon and Stanley Hartman of Lititz; a step-son, Rev. Lloyd Nisly of Birdsboro; 16 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Henry G. Manheim; two sisters, Sallie, and Esther Bucher, both of Annville.

Funeral services were held at the Gingerich Mennonite Church at 2 p.m. July 8 with Bishop Aaron Shank and Bishop Sidney Gingrich officiating. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.
