JOHN BARTEL
John Bartel, son of John P. and Aganetha Plenert Bartel, was born on March 6, 1887 at Hillsboro, Kan. He received his elementary education at Lighthouse School.
At the age of 18 he was baptized by Rev. J. S. Hirschler and received into the membership of the Hillsboro First Mennonite Church, of which he remained a faithful member throughout his life.
On March 16, 1919 he was united in marriage to Susie Friesen. They established their home near Wolf Point, Mont. where father had homesteaded since 1916. In 1920 they returned to the Hillsboro community where he was engaged in farming until his retirement in 1958.
His keen interest in the present building program of the church was expressed in the many small chores he could perform there. He will be missed by many in the community whose welfare he considered his special duty, particularly caring for the needs of the elderly of the neighborhood.
He was a truly devoted husband, father, and grandfather, showing his love concern in his quiet, unassuming way.
During this past year father’s health began to fail noticeably. However, his thoughts and concern were always for others even during times of intense suffering. His desire to be with the Lord was granted on Nov. 17, 1966.
Those who will miss him most are his wife, Susie; his children, Elda and husband Herbert Bartel of Hillsboro, Rose and husband Randolph Thimm of Beatrice, Neb., Wanda and husband Al Swanson of Redding, Calif., Johnnie and wife Myrta of Hillsboro, and Helen and husband Eldon Bargen of Wadsworth, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and one brother, William Bartel, of Hillsboro.
