Leader in Mission Endeavors Dies

Lancaster, Pa. — Bishop Henry F. Garber, who was instrumental in launching the first overseas missionary work of the Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions in East Africa, died here Dec. 23 at the age of 80.

Bishop Garber became a member of the mission board in 1921 and served in turn as treasurer, field worker and chairman. He had been an honorary member of the executive committee since 1956. For many years he represented the Lancaster Conference on the Mennonite Central Committee.

A native of this area, he served in the ministry at the Mt. Joy Mennonite Church for 37 years. In his earlier years he was named a Master Farmer.

MISSION LEADER — Bishop Henry F Garber of Mt. Joy, Pa. who served as treasurer, field worker, and for 22 years as chairman of the Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities, died Dec. 23 at the age of 81. He helped initiate the board's first overseas work in East Africa in the mid-1930s. He served the Mt. Joy Mennonite Church for 37 years. Surviving children are Mrs. John Leatherman of Mt. Joy, Mrs. Lois Keener of Nairobi, Kenya, and Robert of Dire Dawa, Ethiopia.
