DAVID L. SCHMIDT
David L. Schmidt of Rt. 2, Hillsboro, Kan., son of Peter H. and Helena Lehrman Schmidft, was born July 13, 1889, in Marion County, Kansas.
He graduated from the Heimbaugh Elementary school and attended the Hillsboro Academy for two years. He received Jesus Christ as his Saviour and was baptized upon this confession June 4, 1911 by the Elder P. H. Richert. He became a member of the Tabor Mennonite Church. He transferred his membership to the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church at his marriage to Lena Schmidt on Sept. 18, 1913. Rev. P. P. Buller officiated at the wedding. They took up farming on a farm east of the church and lived there their entire married life.
Mr. Schmidt was a good family man and also served actively in the church and community. In church he served as a trustee and on other committees. He was an elementary school board member for many years. He found real joy in his work and in sharing with others. Prayer and worship were integral parts of his life. He and his wife celebrated the 25th and 50th wedding anniversaries.
About four years ago his health was impaired through illness, but in spite of it he was able to excel as a gardener and an apiarist. On Nov. 2, 1967 he suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized for a month. On Jan. 18, 1968 he suffered a stroke while at home, and went on to his eternal home at the Salem Hospital, Hillsboro, on January 21, having reached the age of 78.
He leaves to cherish the memory of his life, his wife, Lena; their four children, Mrs. Olga Dyck, Rt. 1, Walton, Anton and wife, Elsie, Martha and husband John H. Reimer, and Frieda and husband Ted Falming, all of Rt. 2, Hillsboro; 13 grandchildren; one brother, Peter L. Schmidt, Rt. 2, Newton; one sister, Mrs. Lena (Dietrich) Janzen, Rt. 1, Walton; and one step-sister, Mrs. Louise (D. D.) Reimer, Newton. Two grandchildren and one son-in-law preceded him in death.
