Berthold Sommerfeld
Berthold Sommerfeld of Lethbridge, Alta. passed away Dec. 21. He was born May 13, 1923 to Edward and Lydia Sommerfeld in Wolengren, Russia. The family immigrated to Canada in 1928, settling in Waseca, Sask. He married Salome in 1944. They began farming near Waseca. He semi-retired in 1971, moving to Saskatoon. In 1974 he moved to Lethbridge, staying for three years. He lived in Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, Alta. and High Level, Alta. before returning to Lethbridge in 1984. He was an avid supporter of the Gideons. He promoted low acid canola and helped introduce it to the Lethbridge area. He served many years as councillor for the rural municipality of Eldon. Predeceased by his mothe r in 1971, he is survived by his father; his wife Salome; daughter Viola of Calgary; sons Wesley of Saskatoon, Vernon, Eric and Norman of Lloydminster, Arnold of Waseca and Daniel of Taber, Alta.; 11 grandchildren; 4 sisters and 1 brother. The funeral was Dec. 23 in Lashburn (Sask.) Evangelical Free Church.
