MELVIN MAYFIELD
A longtime Cariboo resident, Melvin Mayfield of Williams Lake, B.C., died suddenly on August 12. He was born on February 3, 1916, in Bend, Oregon and came to the Cariboo with his parents, George and Elna Mayfield. Mel ranched with his father at 141 Mile House, Chilko, and later on the Springhouse Ranch. He was married in 1936 to Patricia Herber, a marriage blessed with five children, Philip of Calgary, Donald of Merritt, Gordon of Foremost, Alta., Anne who died in 1952, and Roy. As a stockman Melvin was very active in the Cariboo Cattleman's Association, which he served as director and president. For over twenty years he participated in the annual Williams Lake Stampede. In 1960 the Springhouse Ranch was sold and the family moved to Williams Lake and began logging. In 1975 Melvin retired and enthusiastically renewed old friendships, travelled and fished.
The funeral was conducted from the Cariboo Bethel Church with John Balzer and Neil Isaac ministering.
