MRS. JACOB J. UNRUH
Mrs. Jacob J. Unruh, nee Marie Enns, daughter of Jacob and Maria Somerfeld Enns, was born in Berdjansk, South Russia, on March 10, 1871. She came with her parents to the Springfield community near Goessel, Kansas in 1874. She attended the Maple Hill rural school.
On June 10, 1889 she was baptized upon her confession of faith that Jesus Christ was her Savior by Elder Jacob Buller and became a member of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church. She remained a faithful and loyal member of the church.
On Oct. 12, 1890 she entered holy wedlock with John J. Schroeder, with Rev. Peter Pankratz officiating. They moved in the Blumenfeld area and engaged in farming.
They accepted into their home six foster children, Henry K. Wiebe, Mary K. Wiebe, Arthur Schroeder, Ernest Reimer, John A. Schroeder and Walter, the latter dying in infancy.
Mr. Schroeder died August 27, 1916, but she remained on the farm and with the family carried on the usual work. On Jan. 23, 1923 she married Jacob J. Unruh, with Rev. P. H. Richert officiating. This union was severed when Mr. Unruh died April 21, 1934. Two years later, in May of 1936, she moved to Goessel. She became a resident of the Bethesda Home on April 7, 1958. Her last year found her on the sick list quite often, so that it became necessary for her to remain in the Bethesda Hospital since Jan. 15, 1962.
She went to her eternal home on June 12, 1962 at the age of 91, having lived a full, abundant life. She was a very likable person, a wonderful mother, patient and kind and in command of a cheerful smile. She radiated the Christian spirit to her family and community. The church always meant very much to her.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are her five children: Arthur Schroeder and wife Mary of North Newton, Kansas, Mary and her husband Reinhard Schroeder of Rt. 2, Canton, Kansas, Henry K. Wiebe and wife Agnes of Goessel, Ernest Reimer and wife Edna of Omaha, Nebr., John A. Schroeder and wife Bertha of Rt. 2, Canton, Kansas; three step-children, Jacob S. Unruh and wife Sara of Rt. 2, Newton, P. A. Unruh and wife Clara of Kansas City, Kansas, Elizabeth Unruh of Goessel; 22 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
