— Word has been received that J. P. Franz, lifetime resident of the Buhler community, died at Grace Hospital in Hutchinson early Monday. He was 60 years of age, and a member of the Hebron Mennonite Church. Survivors include his wife, Anna, four sons, five grandchildren, four sisters and four brothers.

JACOB P. FRANZ

Jacob P. Franz was born to Heinrich and Helena Penner Franz on Nov. 30, 1901 in Harvey County near Buhler, Kansas. He spent his childhood on the farm of his parents in Harvey County and received his elementary education at the Alta Grade School. As a young man farming became his chosen profession and while still single he farmed for two years near Burrton.

On Dec. 2, 1923 Jacob P. Franz and Anna I. Regier were united in marriage at the Hebron Mennonite Church with Rev. H. P. Krehbiel officiating. To this union four sons were born, Delbert, Albert, Norman, and Milburn.

Upon his profession of faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour, Jacob P. Franz was baptized on June 12, 1932 by Rev. P. E. Frantz and was received into the membership of the Hebron Mennonite Church.

The family farmed at several locations before moving to Grandfather Penner's farm in 1930 where father spent the last 31 years of his life. All during these years he had been very active in farming and devoted to his work. He worked hard and was punctual in all he did, and took pleasure in keeping things in order.

Father could always see the work of God in nature. Although he enjoyed fairly good health, he was advised by his physician a number of years ago to limit his activities.

His greatest concern was for his family and their relationship to God. His loving grandchildren were an increasing joy to him. Father enjoyed music. He spent many hours listening to and singing his favorite German hymns. His most repeated Bible verse was "Be not deceived, God is not mocked, whatever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."

On Monday morning, Aug. 28, 1961 father took sick suddenly with a severe headache. He was able to walk into the house where he later fell into a coma from which he never recovered. He passed away that same day at 1;00 p.m. at the Grace Hospital in Hutchinson. He reached the age of 59 years, eight months and 29 days.

Those who remain to mourn his departure are his loving wife, Anna; four sons, Delbert and wife Esther and their children, Iris and Merele; Albert and wife Lovella and their children Bradley and Douglas, all of Buhler; Norman and wife Carole and their child Sonya Gay of Lawton, Okla.; and Milburn of the home. Also surviving are four brothers, Herman C. of Halstead, Henry A. of Liberal, Pete M. of Turpin, Okla., and Dave A. of Buhler; four sisters, Mrs. G. A. Ediger, Mrs. J. M. Dick, and Mrs. John R. Dyck, all of Buhler, and Mrs. Edna Dick of Larned; four sisters-in-law, and four brothers-in-law.

His parents, a grandson, Byron Dean Franz, and one sister, Miss Sarah Franz, preceded him in death.

Funeral services were conducted on Friday, Sept. 1, 1961, at the Hebron Mennonite Church with Rev. O'Ray Graber and Rev. Gideon Yoder officiating. He was laid to rest in the Buhler Cemetery, Buhler, Kansas.
