— A group of neighbors and friends gathered at the farm of George Schierling, Sr. one day last week and harvested 12 acres of sorghum. Both Mr. and Mrs. Schierling were in the hospital as a result of an auto accident, Mrs. Schierling having since passed away. Assisting in the helpful deed were Albert Balzer of Inman, who furnished two trucks and did the cutting, Willis Andres and Emil Claassen, who furnished tractors, Herb Klaassen, Benny Adler and Harry Evans. Mrs. Claassen served lunch to the workers.

NEWTON WOMAN HURT IN CRASH DIES WITHOUT REGAINING CONSCIOUSNESS

Mrs. George Schierling, Sr. of Route 4, Newton, who was critically injured in a collision on Highway 50 west of Newton Oct. 5, died Tuesday evening at the Bethel Deaconess Hospital without regaining consciousness.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at the First Mennonite Church of Newton, with burial at Buhler.

Mr. Schierling, who suffered fractured vertebrae in the crash, remains a patient at the hospital.

David C. Goering and 14-year-old son David of Moundridge seriously injured in a two-car collision south of Hillsboro, also on Oct. 5, have now been released from the Axtell Christian hospital.

Fatally injured in the accident were Mrs. Goering, 44, her daughter, Paulette, 12, and Albert Becker, 56, of Galva, all passengers in the Goering car. Funeral services for the mother and daughter were held Thursday afternoon at the Eden church near Moundridge, and services for Mr. Becker were held Friday at the West Zion church in Moundridge.

— A group of neighbors gathered at the farm of George Schierling, Sr. east of Newton on Wednesday, Oct.15, to put up about 12 acres of hay. The group baled the hay and then hauled it in and stored it in the barn. Mrs. Schierling, critically injured in an auto accident near here Oct. 5, died Tuesday evening, Oct. 14. Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the First Mennonite Church, with Rev. Arnold Epp officiating. Mr. Schierling, who received serious back injuries in the accident, was able to attend the funeral on a stretcher.

MRS. GEORGE T. SCHIERLING

Mrs. Marie Kroeker Schierling, daughter of George T. and Agnes Kroeker, was born on April 18, 1897. Her childhood years were spent in the Buhler community where she also attended elementary school. However, her education was interrupted at the age of 14 when she lost the sight of her right eye.

On April 12, 1914, she was baptized upon the confession of her faith by Rev. John Esau and received into the membership of the Zoar Mennonite Church near Inman, Kansas. Some years later, on April 7, 1957, her church membership was transferred to the First Mennonite Church of Newton, Kansas, where she remained a faithful and active member until her death.

She was united in marriage to George T. Schierling on May 30, 1915. The first 15 years of their married life were spent in the Inman community. The following six years were spent in the Oakley community of western Kansas, after which they moved back to Harvey county which was her home until she passed away. She underwent major surgery on numerous occasions but was never found to complain and was always cheerful and willing to do her part.

By her early and unexpected departure she leaves to mourn her husband, George; five children, Mrs. Dorothy Ensz of Colorado Springs, Colo., Harry of Wellington, Kansas, Edward of Pueblo, Colo., Irvin of Newton, Kansas, and George Jr. of the home; two sisters, Martha, Mrs. John Ediger of Hutchinson, Kansas, Esther, Mrs. Eldo Schmidt of Buhler, Kansas; four brothers, George Kroeker of Fresno, Calif., John Kroeker of Five Points, Calif., Ed Kroeker of Hutchinson, and Herbert Kroeker of Dayton, Ohio. there remain also eight grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. One brother preceded her in death.
