MARIA VOTH ISAAC
Maria Voth Isaac, daughter of Cornelues [sic Cornelius] and Helena Richert Voth, was born in Gnadenthal, South Russia on December 1, 1865, and passed away Sunday morning, June 8, 1952, at the age of 86 years and six months. Death came unexpectedly just as she was prepared to go to church.
When she was nine years old she came to America with her parents who settled in the Alexanderwohl community north of Newton. Here she experienced all the hardships of pioneer life.
She was baptized by the Elder Buller and received into the Alexanderwohl church in 1882.
On November 25, 1886, she was married to Jacob Isaac of Lehigh, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Isaac established their home in Lehigh where their three children, Ferdinand, Helen, and Arnold were born.
In 1896 the family moved to Moundridge and have remained residents here until the present time, except for one year spent in Arcadia, California.
Soon after coming to Moundridge, Mrs. Isaac with her husband joined the West Zion Mennonite church and remained a faithful member until her death.
In 1901 Mrs. Isaac assumed the responsibilities of a foster mother to her niece, Martha Voth, who lost her mother at birth on the Arizona mission field. She left her family to make the long journey to Arizona and brought the baby home. This event is typical of her entire life which was dedicated to the service of her family, church, missions, and friends. She believed and relied steadfastly or the power of God. This firm conviction enabled her to meet successfully many situations which humanly speaking were far beyond her strength.
She realized one of her life's dreams when her oldest son Ferdinand became a missionary, for she had dedicated him as a child to that purpose. On October 12, 1946, she had to experience the sorrow of losing Ferdinand, who passed away after 25 years of service in the India mission field. The vacancy left by Ferdinand’s passing was filled to some extent by the love shown to Mother Isaac by Anna Isaac, Ferdinand’s wife.
Another important event in her life was the celebration of their 65th wedding anniversary last fall.
During the past years she assisted in the care of her ailing sister-in-law, Dr. Elizabeth Isaac Thiesen, and Mr. Thiesen, who both have preceded her in death.
Mrs. Isaac is survived by her 91 year old husband, Jacob; a daughter Mrs. John F. Moyer, and a son, Dr. Arnold G. Isaac, both of Newton; five grandsons, one great granddaughter, one sister, Mrs. J. H. Schmidt of Gotebo, Oklahoma, and two brothers. Rev. P. R. Voth of Newton and John J. Voth, of Canton, Kansas.
