— Henry B. Schmidt, Sr., long time resident of Marion County, died Tuesday night at the Marion hospital. Funeral services are to be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 in the First Mennonite Church of Burns, with burial in the Tabor Church cemetery. Mr. Schmidt is survived by his wife, of Peabody; two sons, henry B. Schmidt,, Jr. of Peabody and Rudy Schmidt of Emporia; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Hiebert of Whitewater and Mrs. Elda Mellott of Peabody; and 12 grandchildren.

On Feb. 12, 1883, Henry B. Schmidt was born to Bernhard and Anna Maria (Hartford) Schmidt in Marion County, Kan. He lived in Marion County the majority of his years. He grew up in the vicinity of Goessel and there he received his education and religious training.

Upon the confession of his faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord, and upon his vow of consecration to be faithful unto the end, he was baptized and received into the Alexanderwohl church on May 31, 1903.

He was united in holy union with Eva Hiebert on April 24,1910, and they had the joy of living together in this union for 45 years. In these years they experienced many joys and sorrows, but the greatest joy was to know that Christ was in the home at all times. Among the joys was the privilege of receiving five children and directing them into adulthood. The following children were born to them: Henry, Rudy, Mary, Elda and Olga. One of the sorrows was the passing away of their daughter Olga on May 4,1943.

In about 1941 the family moved to the vicinity of Peabody, Kan. where he was living at the time of his death. While living in this vicinity he and Mrs. Schmidt became charger members of the First Mennonite church of Burns.

Father became sick about two years ago and had suffered somewhat during the whole period. During the last year he went through a series of operations for cancer from which he never recovered. He suffered a great deal during the last year, to the extent that he had to use medicine almost every day. He was taken to the Marion hospital on Oct. 31 and remained there until his death on Nov. 8. He reached the age of 72 years, nine months, and 27 days.

He is survived by his wife; his children, Henry and Esther Schmidt, Rudy and Cornelia Schmidt, Jake and Mary Hiebert, and John and Elda Mellott; 12 grandchildren; one brother, B. H. Schmidt of Newton; one sister, Mrs. Marie Rose of Goessel; and many relatives and friends.

Father always had a great desire for family life. He desired to have the whole family at home, so whenever one of the children came home he asked that the others come home too. The grandchildren were a joy for him.

We are sorry to have father leave us but we rejoice that he is now enjoying the Home, of which he often talked, where there is no suffering or pain.

Funeral services were conducted at the First Mennonite church of Burns, Kan. Interment was made in the Tabor Mennonite cemetery near Goessel, Kan. Rev. G. M. Peters and Rev. H. B. Schmidt of Goessel officiated at the services.
