PROMINENT MT. LAKE CITIZEN SUCCUMBS TO PNEUMONIA
Mt. Lake, Minn., March 20 — Mr. Henry F. Miller, commissioner of this district, passed away at his home on Sunday afternoon, March 16, after a brief attack of pneumonia. Due to his weakened condition from former attacks of the Flu, his heart was not strong enough to withstand the added pressure. He was in town yet on Monday, the 10th, but was taken sick after returning home. Mr. Miller will be missed not only in his immediate family circle but also in other circles, as he has been active in various times holding responsible positions.
Funeral services were conducted at the Bethel Church yesterday afternoon. Th [sic] following account of his life was read during the service.
Henry F. Miller was born in Germany December 15, 1870, and came to America with his parents at the age of two years, settling at Monee, Ill. He was baptized and confirmed in the German Lutheran Church.
Mr. Miller lived in Illinois with his parents until he reached the age of eleven years, then thru the illness of both his parents he started out to make his own way in the world.
He came to Cherokee County, Iowa in 1881, working for and making his home with relatives until he was eighteen years of age. He commenced farming for himself in Osceola County, Iowa in 1894 with his mother keeping house for him, she having been left a widow when Mr. Miller was eleven years old, and making her home with him until her death.
On December 20th 1894 he was united in marriage to Augusta Hupke, and to this union were born five children all of whom survive. They are Lena, Mrs. Henry Schuster of Ocheyeden; Bertha, Mrs. M. A. Schemmel of Brewster, Minn.; Albert C. of Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. Lydia Johnson, and Dorothy, both at home.
He came from Osceola County to Maintain Lake furteen [sic] years ago, settling on his little farm one half mile south of town and where he has lived since.
He had been an active worker on the local school board for nine years, with the Mountain Lake Shipping Association for eight years, and of the board of County Commissioners for over three years, with the Township Board and other various organizations.
Mr. Miller had been in poor health for a number of years due to numerous attacks of the flu. He had enjoyed unusually good health this past winter and until last Monday noon, March 10, while in town getting medicine and supplies for Mrs. Miller who has also been sick in bed since last Thursday, march 6th. Mr. Miller's heart being left in a weakened condition from previous illness was not strong enough to combat pneumonia, which developed as soon as he became sick.
A trained nurse was in constant attendance and with Dr. Schutz did all that medical aid could do to relieve his suffering. Tender care was of no avail as Mr. Miller passed away peacefully and quietly at 1:43 Sunday afternoon, with all the children at his bedside.
He leaves to mourn, his bereaved wife, his five children, six grandchildren, thee boys and three girls, besides a host of relatives and friends. — Mt. Lake Review.
