Katherine (nee Baergen) Nickel was born to Peter G. and Katherine Baergen on a farm at Corn, Okla. on Sept. 7, 1902. She attended the OK District School and Tabor Academy of Hillsboro, Kan. | |||
Upon her confession of faith in Christ, she followed the Lord in baptism on Aug. 18, 1918, and was received into the Bergthal Mennonite Church where she remained a faithful member until 1954, at which time her membership was transferred to the Herold Mennonite Church at Bessie, Okla. | |||
In reference to God's Holy Word, Matthew 6:33 bore its significance to her in a special way: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." It was a blessing to those who knew her as a wife, mother, friend, prayer warrior, and member of the Ladies' Chorus and Ladies' Mission Society to see the fruits of this verse. The depth of joy in her life of service was reflected in the words of her favorite composition, "The Hallelujah Chorus by George F. Handel. | |||
She was married to Cornelius E. Nickel in the Bergthal Church on Aug. 26, 1923. To this union were born five sons and one daughter. Mother and father were accustomed to performing their daily work in fellowship with each other. After a short illness in the Southwestern Memorial Hospital, Weatherford, Okla., she departed to be with the Lord on April 3, 1969, having reached the age of 66 years, six months, and 26 days. | |||
She leaves her husband of Corn; one daughter, Mrs. Wilbur (Viola) Penner of Oklahoma City, Okla.; five sons, Elmer of Hillsdale, Okla., LaVern of Corn, Okla., Glen of Junction City, Kan., Donald Ray of Cordell, Okla., and Richard of Fresno, Calif.; one son-in-law and five daughters-in-law; 11 grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. J. K. (Elizabeth) Warkentin of Clinton, Okla. (two sisters, Helen and Mrs. J. A. (Anna) Ratzlaff, preceded her in death); three brothers, George of LaHabra, Calif., John of Lincoln, Neb. and Samuel of Wichita, Kan. (one brother, Jake, preceded her in death); one foster brother, Ralph Peters of Lafayette, Calif.; one brother-in-law, three sisters-in-law, and a host of other relatives and friends. | |||
