JACOB J. BECKER

Jacob J. Becker, son of Jacob and Sara (Dyck) Becker, was born on Dec. 8, 1888, in Harvey County, Kansas. He grew up in the Buhler community and attended school in this community.

He was baptized upon the confession of his faith in the Hoffnungsau Mennonite Church near Inman, Kan. on June 7, 1908, by Elder Abraham Ratzlaff. On Nov. 18, 1910, he and Eva Dirks were united in marriage by Rev. Peter Flaming. To this union were born a daughter and a son.

In 1910 they moved to Beaver County, Oklahoma and made their home on a farm. Several years later they united with the Friedensfeld Mennonite Church of Turpin. In 1923 they returned to the Buhler community and after a few years made their home on the farm east of Buhler. In 1933 he and mother united with the Buhler Mennonite Church.

He was greatly interested in church and community life and as long as health permitted was faithful in church attendance. When he could no longer directly contribute his help in the church and community he and mother took care of the grandchildren so the children could carry responsibility in these areas.

He patiently cared for mother during her many years of suffering from arthritis. On Nov. 20, 1960, they were privileged to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. This was one of the highlights of their life.

On Oct. 11, 1961, after nearly 51 years of sharing life's joys and sorrows, mother was called to her heavenly reward. About a month after mother's death he moved to the Sunshine Home. He made this his home for the remaining years of his life.

He was in failing health for several years, but remained patient in his illness. On Friday, the day after his birthday, he became seriously ill with pneumonia. On Sunday he was taken to Grace Hospital and on Monday, Dec. 12, he peacefully departed this life to be forever with the Lord. He reached the age of 78 years and four days.

He is survived by a daughter Edna and husband, Art M. Ediger, and a son Albert and wife, Florence, four grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Friesen and Mrs. Susie Friesen, both of the Sunshine Home, and many other relatives and friends.

The funeral was conducted Dec. 15 at the Buhler Mennonite Church by Rev. Harold D. Thieszen, pastor.
