• John Koehn, 62, lifelong resident of the Halstead community and a retired farmer, died Monday morning at the Halstead Hospital after a two-year illness. Surviving are three sisters and five brothers. funeral services are to be held Thursday afternoon at the Grace Mennonite church, with Rev. Carl Dirks and Rev. Kenneth Smith in charge.

JOHN KOEHN

John Koehn, son of Tobias and Susan Becker Koehn, was born Oct. 6, 1900 near Halstead, Kansas and passed away at the Halstead Hospital Dec. 17, 1962, reaching the age of 62 years, two months and 11 days.

He received his education and grew to manhood near Halstead. He accepted the Lord as his personal Saviour, and upon the confession of his faith was baptized and added to the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite on March 28, 1928, remaining a faithful member to the end.

Before his death he lived on a farm east of Hallstead with his brother Eli and sisters Lena and Inez, where they farmed together for a number of years. He was in fair health until 1955 when he had an operation from which he never fully recovered. However, his health was restored to the extent that he helped with the farming again.

On May 10, 1961 he had a major operation for cancer. He rallied for a short time, but soon started declining again and became bedfast in February of 1962. He was very patient during his suffering and never complained, which made it pleasant for those who took care of him. It was an inspiration to be at his bedside to see his loving smile and hear of his living faith in Christ Jesus.

Friday morning, Dec. 14, he was taken to the hospital where on Monday morning he quietly and peacefully passed away, leaving the full assurance of entering into rest. His kind and loving disposition won him many friends. His testimonies and words of courage will never be forgotten.

He leaves to mourn his death, five brothers and three sisters: Ben and wife Ethel, Pete, Eli, Paul and wife Hulda, all of Halstead, Wilbert and wife Margaret of Harrison, Mich., Eva and husband Dan Schmidt of Montezuma, Lena and Inez of Halstead, and a host of relatives and friends.

Father and mother, three brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held from the Grace Mennonite Church west of Halstead on Thursday, Dec. 20, 1962 at 2:00 p.m. with Revs. Carl Dirks and Kenneth Smith officiating. Burial was in the Halstead Cemetery.
