A native of Austria, Mr. Miller came to this country at the age of two. He founded the Miller Store in Butterfield in 1902. For the past four years he had been a guest at the Eventide home in Mountain Lake, and death came Aug. 26 shortly after he had been admitted to the Bethel Hospital. | |||
Surviving are three sons, Harvey, Oliver and Wilfred, all of Butterfield, one brother and three sisters. | |||

Gust Miller was born Dec. 7, 1878, to John and Marie (Hubin) Miller in Austria. At an early age he came to the United States with his parents and settled on a farm northwest of Butterfield, Minn. Here he attended school and grew to manhood. | |||
In May 1896 he was baptized upon confession of his faith and became a member of the Mennonite church. A few years later his parents sold the farm and he moved with them to Sarona, Wisconsin. | |||
Mr. Miller always had a strong desire to be engaged in business and this wish was fulfilled when he returned to Butterfield and in May 1904, went into partnership with Jacob Rupp in the grocery business. | |||
On Oct. 1, 1905, he was united in marriage to Kate Rupp and to this union three sons were born, Harry, Oliver and Winfred. | |||
In 1907 he dissolved partnership and purchased the J. J. Harder building, where he started a grocery and dry goods business under the name of The Miller Store. He took much pride in pleasing his customers and never forgot to take a sack of candy along when he went visiting where there were children in the home. | |||
The deceased served on the village council, fire department and church board of the Mennonite church for a number of years. | |||
On Sept. 6, 1948, Mrs. Miller passed away and he continued living with his three sons, who took over the business. | |||
His health failed and on July 11, 1954, he became ill and was taken to Bethel hospital in Mt. Lake, where he was taken care of until he was moved to the Eventide Home. Here he passed away at 10:30 p. m. on August 26 at the age of 79 years, eight months and 19 days. | |||
Besides his three sons, Harry, Oliver and Winfred, three sisters and one brother survive, as follows: Mrs. P. W. Mommsen (Adeline) of Rice Lake, Wis.; Mrs. A. L. Peroutky (Clara)of Milwaukee, Wis.; Mrs. Joe Clausen (Otillie) of Rice Lake, Wis.; and Herbert Miller of Jacksonville, Florida, besides numerous other relatives and friends. | |||
He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters: Henry Miller and Erwin Miller, Amialial Rupp and Hannah Linscheid. | |||
Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon, August 29. Family services were held at the Johnson chapel in Mountain Lake at 1:15 and public services at 2:00 o'clock at the Mennonite church of Butterfield. Rev. Peter Tschetter officiated at the last rites. | |||
Interment was made in the Butterfield Mennonite cemetery. | |||
