VERNON E. PLETT

Vernon E. Plett, second son of David E. and Helena Pankratz Plett, was born Jan. 25, 1920, at Reedley, Calif. He died May 18, 1999, at the age of 79 at St. Mary's Mercy hospital in Enid, Okla.

He grew up at various locations in Kansas and Oklahoma, where he had his elementary and secondary schooling.

Vernon was baptized and became a member of the Mennonite Brethren Church in Inola, Okla. Later he joined Tabor Mennonite Church at Newton, Kan. At the time of his death he was a member at Homestead Bible Church.

During World War II he was a medical technician with the U.S. Army Air Force for four years, two of which were in Europe.

On Aug. 23, 1946, he married Renetta Unruh of Peabody, Kan. at Tabor Mennonite Church. To this union three daughters and two sons were born.

Vernon's occupations included carpentry, farming and aircraft mechanics, and he later retired from a welding and auto mechanic business. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening and yard work.

In 1996 he and Renetta celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He enjoyed family gatherings and followed with interest he achievements of his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Renetta; three daughters, Alice and her husband Larry Jordan of Clinton, Elaine Hunter of Fairview, Peggy and her husband Stuart Cornwell of Bixby; two sons, Lloyd and his wife Cheri of Edgecrest, Calif., and Perry and his wife Jennifer of Okeene; 12 grandchildren; one great-grandchild, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; his mother, Helena Plett of Meeker; two brothers, Mike of Inola and Clifford of Ramona, and four sisters, Orletta Ketts of Augusta, Kan., Alverda Dexter of Big Cabin, Betty Fletcher of Meeker and Loretta Craighead of Sacremento [sic], Calif.
