Early Day Beaver County, Okla. Settler Dies

Liberal, Kansas. — Mrs. Justina Plett, 84, who with her husband Henry Plett farmed in Beaver County, Okla. for more than 50 years, died at Epworth hospital here Jan. 26.

Funeral services were held Jan. 30 at the Turpin, Okla. Mennonite Church, with Rev. Levi Koehn and Rev. John Lehnert officiating.

Born in Russia on Oct. 3, 1876, Mrs. Plett came to the United States with her parents when 11 years of age. They settled in eastern Reno County, Kansas. She married Mr. Plett in 1902, and they moved to Beaver county in 1903, remaining there until his death in 1957.

Mrs. Plett had been living with a daughter, Mrs. Edward Pankratz, in Colorado Springs, and became ill while on a visit with relatives in Beaver County in December 1960. Surviving are two daughters, four sons, ten grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and one sister living at Reedley, Calif.

MRS. JUSTINA PLETT

Mrs. Justina (Goertzen) Plett was born in South Russia to Henry and Marie (Dick) Goertzen on Oct. 3, 1876, and departed this life Jan. 26, 1961, having reached the age of 84 years, three months and 23 days.

In 1884 she immigrated with her parents to America, and settled near Inman, Kan. In 1895 she was united in marriage to Henry Plett. For 56 years they shared life's joys and sorrows. To this union were born four sons and two daughters.

In 1903 they came from Inman, Kan. to Beaver County, Okla. to homestead 17 miles southeast of Beaver in the Elmwood district. Five years later they sold their homestead and purchased a farm in the Turpin community where they resided until Mr. Plett's death in 1957.

Since that time she had made her home with her daughter and Pankratz of Colorado Springs, Colo., except for the last four months The last month before she was hospitalized she spent with Mrs. Aganetha Loepp of Liberal, Kan.

In 1912 she became a member of the Turpin Mennonite Church. She kept up her devotion and prayer life for her church and family until her passing. Her faith in life was inspired by Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and today and forever.”

She leaves to mourn, four sons and their wives, Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Plett, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Plett, Mr. and Mrs. Curt Plett, Mr. and Mrs. George Plett, all of Turpin, Okla.; two daughters and their husbands, Mr. and Mrs Edw. J. (Mary) Pankratz of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert (Sara) Penner of Turpin, Okla.; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. George Pauls of Reedley, Calif., and many relatives and friends. Seven brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held at the Turpin Mennonite Church on Jan. 30 with Rev. John Lehnert and Rev. Levi Koehn officiating.
