ANNA HOCHSTETLER SHETLER

Anna Hochstetler Shetler, daughter of Henry and Anna Swartzendruber Hochstetler, was born in Johnson County, Iowa, Dec 16, 1873, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Willard Boller, Feb 1, 1955, at the age of 81 years, one month and 15 days.

On August 13, 1893, she was united in marriage to Joseph J. Shetler with whom she lived in matrimony nearly 58 years. He preceded her in death Sept. 30, 1951. To this union were born 10 children — seven sons and three daughters, all of whom survive to mourn her departure. They are Henry, Frank, John, Omar, Lydia (Mrs. Harry Teuscher), all of Pigeon, Mich.; Eli of Knoxville, Tenn.; Rev. Emil of Staunton, Virginia; Mary (Mrs. Willard Boller), and Agnes (Mrs. Eldon Swartzendruber), both of Kalona, Iowa; and Dan of Vancouver, Wash. Also 32 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren survive.

She was one of a family of nine children — Chriss and Eli of Kalona, Iowa; Mrs. John Brenneman and Mrs. Lew Gingerich of Wellman, Iowa; Mrs. Joe Maust and Mrs. Dan Shetler of Pigeon, Mich.; Mrs. E. A. Miller of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Dr. Menno of Phillipsburg, Kansas; and Henry of De Lake, Oregon. Of these only two survive — Arminda (Mrs. John Brenneman) and Esther (Mrs. E. A. Miller). Henry preceded her in death only three days.

Sister Shetler always took an active interest in all the activities of the church and was seldom absent from services. At the age of 16 years she accepted Christ as her Saviour and remained faithful unto the end.

She will not only be missed by her family and church, but also by the many friends she made by the untiring efforts she put forth in caring for the sick. She was deeply concerned in the spiritual welfare of her children, mentioning each one by name in her prayers.

The cause of her death was a series of strokes. All that was possible to do for her was done, but after 12 weeks of illness she passed away. We humbly submit to His will.

Funeral services were held Feb. 3, at the East Union church, Kalona, Iowa in charge of D. J. Fisher and A. Lloyd Swartzendruber, and at the Pigeon Mennonite church, Pigeon, Mich., Feb 5 in charge of Donald King and Emanuel Swartzendruber. Interment was made in the Pigeon church cemetery.
