— A pioneer Marion county farmer, John A. Unruh, 76, passed away at the Bethesda hospital on Nov. 12, and funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Goessel Mennonite church. He is survived by his wife, five daughters and two sons: Mrs. H. A. Reimer of Newton, Mrs. Marvin Epp of Ferndale, Wash., Mrs. J. S. Goertzen of Hillsboro, Mrs. Nick Schmidt, Mrs. Ben Janzen, Jake and Otto Uruh, all of the Newton vicinity.

JOHN A. UNRUH

John A. Unruh, son of Jacob and Anna (Schmidt) Unruh, was born on October 15, 1871, in the village of Alexanderwohl in South Russia, and departed this life on November 12, 1947, at 2:15 p. m. at the Bethesda hospital at the age of 76 years and 28 days.

In 1874 at the age of three years he came with his parents to America, where they settled north of Newton in Marion county, Kansas. Here he also received his education in the grade schools. He was baptized on May 18, 1891, by Elder Jacob Buller upon the confession of his faith and was received as a member of the Alexanderwohl church.

On November 25, 1896, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Schmidt, which relation was happily shared for nearly 51 years. The golden wedding anniversary was quietly observed in November of 1946. This union was blessed with eight children: three sons, Jacob E., Otto, and one who died in infancy; and five daughters, Margaret, Pauline, Elizabeth, Susie, and Annie. When in 1920 the Goessel Mennonite church was organized, he with his family joined this church as charter members and remained a faithful member till his end.

His health began to fail in July of this year. He sought medical aid, which did not seem to bring much relief. After a thorough examination, his physician advised him to stay at the hospital at Goessel. He remained for five weeks, during which time he underwent a major operation. In spite of the best care, he endured many a discomfiture and painful suffering. His faith and prayers helped him to submit patiently to God's will. He had full assurance of his heavenly inheritance and knew where he was going. He was thankful for everything that was done for him, but wished to go and be with his Lord.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife, and two sons and five daughters with their families: Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Reimer of Newton, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Unruh, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Goertzen, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Janzen, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Schmidt, and Mr. and Mrs. Otto Unruh, all of the Goessel community, and Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Epp of Ferndale, Washington. There are 21 grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers and two sisters. — The bereaved family.
