Mrs. Anna (Christophel) Wise, wife of Elmer Wise, Wakarusa, Ind., passed away at Elkhart General hospital on Wednesday morning, April 16, 1947, from burns and shock suffered on April 14 at her home seven miles northeast of Wakarusa, Ind. | |||
Although Mrs. Wise was not able to give a very coherent account of what actually happened, it was gathered that her apron caught fire as she attempted to remove a pan from the stove. She was badly burned before help arrived. Norman Wise, a step-son, was in the yard and saw the blaze through the window. He helped her put out the fire and then called neighbors and a physician. The husband, who is employed at the Sash and Door Co. at Goshen, was at work at the time. | |||
Mrs. Wise had been in ill health for the past two years after suffering a stroke of paralysis. She was born in Elkhart county, Ind., August 27, 1886, the daughter of Isaiah and Barbara Christophel. She was married to Elmer Wise on Sept. 9, 1934. Before her marriage she was employed as a clerk at the Kauffman Variety Store in Nappanee. | |||
The deceased was a member of the North Main Street Mennonite church of Nappanee, and was active in Sunday School and church work until her health failed. She served as superintendent of the primary department for many years. She was also a song leader and served in the sewing circle and as a member of the mission board committee. | |||
Surviving are the husband; two step-sons, Norman and Manford, at home; two step-daughters, Mrs. Lois Myers of Route 3, Goshen, and Mrs. John Hawks of Lafayette; two sisters, Mrs, Martha Beard of Calgary, Alta., and Mrs. Sylvester Miller of northeast of Wakarusa. | |||
Funeral services took place at the North main Street church on Sunday, April 20, with Homer North officiating. interment was made in union Center cemetery. | |||
