Relatives in Newton received word last Friday of the passing of J. B. Wiebe in a Syracuse, Kansas, hospital as a result of injuries sustained in highway crash near Johnson, Kansas, on Aug. 25. Instantly killed in the accident were Mrs. Wiebe and Leon Balzer, 20-year-old grandson of the Wiebes. | |||
Mrs. C. D. Klassen, sister of Mr. Wiebe who resides here, planned to attend his funeral at the former home, Perryton, Texas, on Sept 4. Mrs. Wiebe was buried at Perryton on Aug. 28, and the body of Leon Balzer was sent to his home, Dallas, Ore. for burial. | |||
The Wiebes and their grandson were en route to Oregon when the tragedy occurred, their car colliding with a truck. The grandson had been working in the harvest in Texas and they planned to attend the wedding of his sister, Bernice, on Sept. 5. | |||

Jacob B. Wiebe was born March 9, 1872, in Waldheim, South Russia. In 1877 he came with his parents, Jacob and Susanna Bartel Wiebe, to the United States and they settled at Burrton, Kansas. There, with his parents, he went through the hard experience of pioneer life. | |||
He accepted Christ as his Saviour in 1882, was baptized by Elder Henry Toews, and was accepted into the Bethel Mennonite church at Inman, Kansas. | |||
On Dec. 14, 1892, he was united in marriage to Aganetha Neufeld. To this union were born eight children, three sons and five daughters. They are Abraham N. Wiebe, Waka, Texas; Jacob N. Wiebe, Clinton, Okla.; Mrs. Helen Flaming, Weatherford, Okla.; Mrs. Agnes Janzen, Hooker, Okla.; Mrs. Susie Rempel, Corn, Okla.; Mrs. Anna Friesen, Hooker, Okla.; Mrs. Martha Balzer, Dallas, Ore.; and Herman A. Wiebe, Waka, Texas. | |||
In 1901 the parents moved to Oklahoma and in 1917 to Ochiltree county, Texas. | |||
On June 13, 1942, mother, with whom father shared joy and sorrow for 49 years and six months, preceded him in death. | |||
Father enjoyed good health most of his life, until recent years, when he had some minor accidents and ailments. | |||
In March, 1943, father was united in marriage to Betty G. Riley, and they made their home in Perryton, Texas. | |||
On Monday, August 25, 1947, our parents and their grandson, Leon Balzer, started on a trip to Dallas, Oregon. they left home at 11:30 a. m. About 150 miles from home, 10 miles west of Johnson, Kansas, at 4:00 p. m. they met with a tragic accident which proved fatal to all three. Our step-mother was killed instantly, and the boy died en route to the hospital. Father passed away at the Donahue Memorial hospital, Syracuse, Kansas, three days later. | |||
The end came August 28 at 7:05 p. m. He reached the age of 75 years, five months and 19 days. He suffered a compound fracture of the arm and severe head injuries. He was conscious only part of the first day. | |||
Father leaves to mourn his death three sons and five daughters, five sons-in-law, three daughters-in-law, 38 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two step-daughters and their husbands, five step-grandchildren, five brothers and one sister, and a host of other relatives and friends. | |||
Preceding him in death, besides those previously mentioned, were his parents, two brothers one sister and four grandchildren. | |||
Father is now in his heavenly home. He was a devout Christian and a loving father. We deeply mourn his death, but not as such who have no hope. We shall meet again some day. — The Children. | |||
