One Killed In Runaway On Berne Streets

AMISH MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER DIES INSTANTLY WHEN THROWN OFF BUGGY

Berne, Ind. — A large number of relatives and friends attended funeral services in the Amish community here Aug. 4 for Mrs. Solomon Wengard [sic Wengerd], 69, who was instantly killed in a runaway on the streets of Berne last Friday.

Mrs. Wengerd and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Andrew Wengerd, 35, were riding in their buggy on Monroe Street when a motorcycle struck a rear wheel. This frightened the horse, causing it to run away and turn onto Water Street, where the buggy upset, throwing the two occupants out. It is believed the elder Mrs. Wengerd struck a tree. Her daughter-in-law had a head injury, bruises and suffered from shock, and the buggy was demolished.

Mrs. Wengerd was the former Elizabeth Yoder of Holmes County, Ohio. Her husband died several years ago. Surviving are eight children and two step-daughters as well as a number of grandchildren.
