JOHN H. BECKER

John H. Becker was born August 29, 1878, near Galva, Kansas and passed away after a short illness on December 28, 1951, in the hospital at Halstead, Kansas, reaching the age of 73 years, three months and 29 days.

He grew to manhood and received his schooling in McPherson county, Kansas. At the age of fifteen years, he felt the need of a Saviour and upon remission of his sins and confession of faith, he was baptized by Elder T. A. Unruh on March 23, 1894, joining the Church of God in Christ Mennonite. He remained a faithful member of this church to the end.

On October 14, 1900, he was united in marriage to Sarah Unruh, with whom he shared joys and sorrows for over 51 years.

For many years they lived on a farm near Galva, Kansas; several years at Halstead, and about 17 years ago they retired and purchased a home in Halstead. Later they built a new home, where he lived at the time of his death. Their home was a welcome place where many went in and out, enjoying the great hospitality they showed to all. His kind and loving Christian ways have won him many friends.

For many years, his health had not been good. He was in his usual health until Friday morning about five o'clock, when he became very sick. The doctor was called and he was taken to the hospital where he quietly passed away at 8:25 a.m. His sudden passing away has taken from us a loving husband, a good neighbor and a faithful brother. So it has pleased the Lord; may we say with Job, praise be to His name.

He leaves to mourn, his deeply bereaved wife; three brothers, Pete, Adam and Abe Becker: one sister, Mrs. Ben Koehn, al1 of Galva, Kansas, and a host of relatives and friends.

His parents, Jacob P. and Helena Becker, three brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday afternoon, December 31, 1951, at 1:30 o'clock from the Grace Mennonite church of Halstead. Rev. Carl Dirks, Rev Paul Becker and Rev. Norman Eicher were the officiating clergymen. The church choir sang “My Heavenly Home” and "Beautiful City” in the home at the short service which preceded the church services. Other songs in the church were: “Heaven is My Home,” "Nearer My God To Thee” "Life Will Be Sweeter Some Day.” "Under His Wings” and at the cemetery, they sang “We are Going Down The Valley.” Casket bearers were his nephews, Hermit Becker, Urfa Becker, Charlie Becker, Fred Becker, Dewey Unruh and Otis Koehn. He was laid to rest in the family lot in the Lone Tree cemetery near Galva with the directors of the Kaufman Funeral Home of Halstead in charge.
