Mrs. Lena Base Schmidt was born December 2, 1856, in Poland, Russia, and died June 18, 1930 at her home near Pawnee Rock, Kansas, at the age of 74 years, 6 months and 16 days. Funeral services were held the following Sunday at the Mennonite Church, north of Pawnee Rock, and a large crowd was present to pay its respects to the good woman. | |||
She was united in marriage to Cornelius A. Schmidt in 1873, in Poland, Russia. The couple migrated to America in 1885, settling near Pawnee Rock and later moving to Dundee, where they lived for many years. To this union were born 14 children, seven of whom have preceded their mother in death. Her husband departed this life in 1915, fifteen years ago. The seven children who survive her, are: Peter and El Schmidt and Mrs. Laura Unruh of Greensburg, Mrs. Agnes Smith and Jake Schmidt of Dundee, Amos Schmidt of great Bend and Mrs. Ella Unruh of Coldwater. Thirty-six grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive. | |||
In her early years Mrs. Schmidt gave her life within the Master's keeping and was baptized. In her later years while making her home with the children at Greensburg, she united with the M. B.
