SUSIE FRIESEN BARTEL
Susie Friesen Bartel, daughter of Jacob J. C. and Cornelia Wall Friesen, was born Oct. 20, 1894, near Lehigh, Kan. She was baptized in 1909 and received into the membership of Lehigh Mennonite Church. She transferred her membership to First Mennonite Church of Hillsboro in 1911, where she remained a faithful member until her death.
She was married to John Bartel on March 16, 1919. They homesteaded near Volt, Mont. After about two years they returned to Kansas and farmed southeast of Hillsboro. Five children were born to them. Her husband died after 47 years of marriage.
She enjoyed teaching a German Sunday school class and was active in many other church activities. She spent her retirement years serving residents of Salem Home while she resided in her apartment at Parkside Homes.
Among her special interests were gardening, nurturing of flowers and doing handwork. Each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have been recipients of her labor of love.
She died on Jan. 2, 1984, at the age of 89. Surviving are her children, Elda and Herbert Bartel of Hillsboro, Rosa and Randy Thimm of Beatrice, Neb., Wanda and Alfred Swanson of Turlock, Calif., Johnnie and Myrta Bartel of Hillsboro, and Helen and Eldon Bargen of North Newton, Kan.; a sister Anna Jantz of Couteau, Okla.; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one grandson, seven sisters and three brothers.
