●  Henry Bartel, 85, died Monday at Salem Hospital in Hillsboro after a week’s illness.  He lived alone in Hillsboro and became ill on Dec. 19.  The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Mennonite Church of Hillsboro.  Survivors include a son, Elgin, of Hillsboro, and two daughters, Mrs. Dave Bafus of Newton and Mrs. Jake Becker of Hillsboro.

Henry J. Bartel, son of Peter and Helena (Bartel) Bartel, was born on July 24, 1882, at Hillsboro, Kan.  He died after a short illness in Salem Hospital on Dec. 25, 1967.
In 1882 he moved with his parents to the Gnadenburg community in Harvey County, and in 1898 they moved to Bessie, Okla.
He was baptized and received into the membership of the Herold Mennonite Church at Bessie, Okla. on June 3, 1900, by Rev. Jacob Toews.
In 1906 he went to Aberdeen, Idaho, where he made a homestead and farmed.  On March 17, 1910, he was married to Eva Bartel.  They made their home in Idaho until 1912 when they moved to Hillsboro.  Three children were born to this union:  Reola, Freda, and Elgin.
He transferred his membership to the First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro in 1913 and was a faithful member of this church at the time of his death.
His first wife, Eva, preceded him in death on Dec. 10, 1938.
On March 27, 1942, he was married to Anna Krause.  They lived on the farm until their retirement in 1951 when they moved to town.  His second wife preceded him in death on July 29, 1959.
He leaves to mourn his passing his children:  Reola and Jacob Becker, Hillsboro, Frieda and David Bafus, Newton, Elgin and Evelyn Bartel, Hillsboro; two sisters:  Anna (Mrs. Cornelius Nickel), Cordell, Okla. and Eva (Mrs. Julius Harms), Clinton, Okla.; eleven grandchildren, other relatives and many friends.

H. J. BARTEL

Henry J. Bartel, son of Peter and Helena (Bartel) Bartel, was born on July 24, 1882, at Hillsboro, Kan. He died after a short illness in Salem Hospital on Dec. 25, 1967.
