Funeral services for Joseph H. Bare, 97, of Harper were conducted Sept. 8 at the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church there. He died Sept. 4 at the Anthony Hospital. Survivors include his widow, the former Ida Bauer; two daughters, Olive Bare of Newton and Marcella Diller of Hesston; two sons, Olin of Harper and Ivan of Lebanon, Ore.; one sister, Mrs. Kate Underwood of Modesto, Calif.; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Joseph H. Bare

Joseph H. Bare, son of Benjamin and Magdalena (Good) Bare, was born on June 19, 1879, in Marion County, Kansas. After an illness of one month, he died at the Anthony, Kan., Hospital Sept. 4, 1976, at the age of 97.

He lived in Marion County until he was 17. In 1896 the family moved to Jasper County, Missouri, and in 1911 to Harper, Kan.

In his youth he accepted Christ as his Savior and was a member of the White Hall Mennonite Church near Oronogo, Mo. He later became a member of the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church, Harper, Kan., of which he was a member at the time of his death.

He was married to Ida E. Bauer on Feb. 14, 1915, at Protection, Kan. All of their over 61 years of marriage were spent in the Harper area except four years in Missouri in the 1920s. He was a retired farmer.

Joe will be missed by Ida; by two sons, Olin of Harper and Ivan of Lebanon, Ore.; two daughters, Olive Bare, Newton, and Marcella, Mrs. Bob Diller, Hesston; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and one sister, Mrs. Kate Underwood, Modesto, Calif.

Preceding him in death were a son and a daughter who died in infancy; a brother, Mahlon Bare; and five sisters, Alice Bickel, Lydia Reiff, Fannie Burkhart, Nannie Weaver, and Martha Hostetler.

Funeral services were held Sept. 8 in the Pleasant Valley church, Harper, with Rev. Robert Zehr and Rev. Fred Gingerich officiating.

We are thankful we have been privileged to have this long life with our loved one, and that he has been exceptionally well through most of his years. He liked to read, especially the Bible, and he had a great concern for the salvation of souls which was expressed in two books which he wrote. Music, especially singing in his rich bass voice, has played a great part in his life, and we are grateful for the activities we have shared in music and spiritual areas.
