Walter Eugene Ratzlaff, son of Rev. John J. and Mary (Decker) Ratzlaff, was born on June 2, 1902 near Meno, Okla. He died on Sunday, April 10, 1977 at the Salem Hospital, Hillsboro, Kan., having reached the age of 74. | |||
He was baptized on Feb. 27, 1921 by his great-uncle, Rev. Abraham Ratzlaff, and became a member of the New Hopedale Mennonite Church, Meno. | |||
He graduated from the Bethel Academy, North Newton, Kan., in 1923. | |||
On Dec. 4, 1924 he married Alice Ann Unruh in the Friedensthal Mennonite Church near Durham, Kan. The couple made their home on a farm near Meno. To this union five children were born, all of whom survive. | |||
In August 1952 the couple and their three children remaining at home moved to a farm near Lehigh, Kan. where they lived until 1965 when they retired and moved to Lehigh. On April 5, 1953, Walter transferred his church membership to the Lehigh Mennonite Church where he was a member at the time of his death. | |||
Walter was always active in church and community affairs and enjoyed carrying out responsibilities and duties given him. | |||
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Ivan and wife Betty of Freemont, Calif., Johnnie and wife Doris and Bruce and wife Shiela, all of Newton; two daughters, Kathryn and husband Douglas Gering of Newton and Iris and husband Lee Dobler of Lake Arrowhead, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; three sisters, Sadie, Mrs. Edwin Harms of Wichita, Kathryn, Mrs. Milford Blair of Hillsboro, and Esther, Mrs. John Schrag of McPherson. | |||

Walter E. Ratzlaff, 74, of Lehigh, the father of Johnnie and Bruce Ratzlaff and Mrs. Douglas (Kathryn) Gering of Newton, died Sunday in Hillsboro.
