Services at Hillsboro For Family Killed In Illinois Crash
Hillsboro, Kan. — This central Kansas community was saddened by a Labor Day weekend highway tragedy at Jacksonville, Ill. which claimed the lives of a former Hillsboro couple and their two young children.
Willard Dahl, 24, his wife Mary, 22, and their children, Jean, 2, and Stephen, four months, left their home at Peoria, Ill. last Saturday evening for a week end visit with parents and friends here. All were instantly killed at 11;25 p.m. at Jacksonville when their car was struck broadside by another auto at an intersection.
The bodies were flown to Kansas early this week, and funeral services are announced for 10 a.m. Thursday at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church of which the parents were members.
Four teenage boys were riding in the other car involved in the crash, two of whom were killed and the other two critically injured. It was reported that the car carrying the boys ran a stop sign.
Mr. Dahl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Abe B. Dahl of Hillsboro, was a graduate of the local high school and attended Tabor College. Last spring he received a degree in electrical engineering from Kansas State University and accepted employment in the research division of the Caterpillar Tractor Co., Peoria.
Mrs. Dahl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin C. Schmidt of rural Hillsboro, also grew up here and attended the local schools.

It was with high aspirations for their future that they moved to Chillicothe, Ill. where Willard was employed with the Caterpillar Tractor Company of Peoria as a research engineer. It was a desire to visit loved ones that led them to begin a Labor Day weekend trip to Hillsboro. While traveling at the edge of Jacksonville, Ill., they were struck by another car and in an instant the Lords saw fit, in His wisdom, to receive Willard, Mary, Jean, and Stephen unto Himself. Their death came on Sept. 3, 1966.
Surviving Willard are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Abe B. Dahl, and eight brothers and sisters. Don, Sharon, Beverly and Barbara remain with the parents at home.
