JOHN PLETT

His name was on the ushers' list for the Virgil (Ont.) Church on July 24. But on July 22 the Lord saw fit to call John Plett home to himself quite suddenly. John Plett was born on December 30, 1921 in Neu Schoensee in the Sagradovka settlement in southern Russia, to Johann and Maria (Klassen) Plett. His early life was hard because of the circumstances in the Soviet Union at the time. On November 30, 1941 he was married to Erna Ledwez in Neu Schoensee by Rev. Johann Klein. They fled Russia during the war, went from there to Poland and in 1945 came to Germany. In February, 1948 the family was able to emigrate to Paraguay and in 1956 they came to Canada and settled in the Niagara Peninsula in Ontario. Mr. Plett was employed as a bricklayer most of the time.

After accepting Christ as his Saviour, he was baptized in Germany on June 1, 1947. On December 7, 1958 he and his wife became members of the Virgil Mennonite Brethren Church, where he remained a faithful participant until his death. He was also a faithful priest to his family.

He is survived by his wife, Erna; four sons, John of St. Catharines, Walter and wife Lydia of Thorold, Ont., Herman and wife Cheryl of Kitchener, and Willie and wife Robin of Niagara Falls; three daughters, Agnes and Gerhard Buchholz of Port Colborne, Ont., Mary and Eric Scharz of Burlington, Ont., and Erna, at home; his parents, Johann and Maria Plett and two brothers, Abram and Gerhard and their families in Paraguay and Peter in Russia; ten grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives. The funeral was held on July 25 at the Virgil Church with Abe Quiring ministering.
