HILDA REGEHR
Hilda Regehr, daughter of Isaac and Susie (nee Penner) Regehr, was born in Coaldale, Alberta on September 24,1949. She accepted Christ as her personal Saviour at the age of seven and was baptized and received into the Coaldale Mennonite Brethren Church at the age of thirteen. She was a willing worker and helpful in many church activities, beginning her music ministry in the church at the age of fifteen.
After completing high school in Coaldale, she attended Bethany Bible Institute, where the Lord spoke to her about missions. Following three months in summer work in Germany, she received her teacher training at the University of Lethbridge. Hilda spent three enjoyable years teaching Music and Language Arts in Taber, Alberta.
Hilda applied to Radio HCJB for work in the German Language Service, and arrived in Quito August 8, 1976. She spent nine brief but fruitful months there, three of which were devoted almost exclusively to Spanish language study.
On April 29, while she was walking home on the sidewalk, she was struck from behind by a car which was out of control. Although she did not regain consciousness, her parents were privileged to arrive in Quito on time to spend the last two days with her before her passing. She entered the Kingdom to share all of eternity with God on May 5.
On May 6 a memorial service was held in Quito with Pastor Ron Cline of the English Fellowship Church officiating, and members of the German Service as well as others participating both in English and Spanish. At the funeral service in Coaldale on May 10, pastor Rudy Heidebrecht officiated. The MB Board of Missions and Services was represented by the chairman, Herb Brandt of Vancouver; HCJB's representative was Chester Fisher of Peterborough, Ontario, Chairman of the Board of Directors, World Radio Missionary Fellowship, Canada. Hilda is mourned by her parents, two brothers, Jake and Abe; one sister, Elfrieda; and many friends.
