H. H. BANMAN
H. H. Banman, has now passed through both life and death. His hopes and prayers to be relieved of long, indescribable pain and suffering were realized when God called him to his eternal home Tuesday, July 11, at about 11 o'clock in the morning, bringing the span of his life to 85 years, 8 months, and 26 days.
Mr. Banman was born October 15, 1864 in South Russia. He was the oldest son of Rev. and Mrs. Henry and Helen Buller Banman. At the age of eight years he came to America with his parents and settled on a farm near Goessel, Kansas. As pioneers on a virgin soil and in a new land these newcomers experienced the hardships so common to immigrants.
He enjoyed the blessings of a Christian home and united with the Mennonite Church through baptism upon the confession of faith in Jesus Christ as his personal Savior on September 7, 1684 [sic 1884].
On January 9, 1887, he was united in marriage to Marie Boese of Goessel, Kansas. To this union were born six children. Two, Maria and Henry, died in infancy. Four children survive: Helen, Mrs. B. H. Mathies; Adolph of Boise, Idaho; Henry Ralph of Bakersfield, California, and Ted of Aberdeen, Idaho. Besides these four children he is survived by one son-in-law and three daughters-in-law, 77 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren, two brothers — John of Lake View, Oregon, and Frank of Canton, Kansas.
Following their marriage, our parents moved to a farm near Lehigh, Kansas. Here they took into their home an orphan boy by the he was 18 years old. He died in was six years old when they took him in. He stayed with them until he yas [sic] 18 years old. He died in Dinuba, Calif., several years ago. [sic typesetting error in original]
In 1914 they moved to Aberdeen, Idaho and settled on a homestead northwest of Aberdeen. After several years of crop failure, they moved to an irrigation farm south of Aberdeen. When the children grew up and one by one left home, our parents moved to town, where he then worked in the store for 11 years.
On January 9, 1937, our parents were given the rare privilege of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. This made them very happy and grateful to our heavenly Father. For this occasion father had written a brief sketch of their life story. He wrote this among other things: "We have lived most of our married life in poverty, but rich in God. With the help of God it was possible for us to give our children a good education.”
Mother passed on to her eternal home August 4, 1937. For a number of years father was the faithful caretaker of the Mennonite church. Sickness and old age made it necessary for him to give up this work that he had so faithfully and conscientiously carried out. Many times he has walked up the stairway to ring the church bell calling his community for divine worship. For many pilgrims, young and old, he rang the funeral bells. Today they rang for him.
He has gone to rest. “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth. They rest from their labors and their works do follow them.”
Funeral services for H. H. Banman were conducted at the First Mennonite Church, Friday, July 14, at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. H. N. Harder officiating. Special music was rendered by a male quartet: Herbert Hege, Arthur Isaak, Edwin Becker, and Harold Isaak. Pallbearers were: H. C. Wiebe, H. B. Wiebe, John H. Friesen, P. F. Funk, H. C. Taves, and Ira Wenger.
Burial was made in the Homestead cemetery. — The children
