Herman Hamm was born to Peter and Helena (Sperling) Hamm on Feb. 5, 1901, in McPherson County, Kansas, about eight miles northeast of Buhler. Here he spent his early childhood and youth, receiving his elementary education in the Sparta and Lake Shore schools.
Upon the passing of father, who died at an early age leaving mother with several young children, the responsibilities of assisting mother in the caring for the family fell heavily upon Herman, responsibilities which he shouldered well. In his home life, he cared for mother to the best of his ability, being deeply concerned for her well-being.
