MRS. WM. J. EWERT

Our mother, Ernestine (nee Dirks) Ewert, was born March 5, 1865, on an island called Korzeniec which was formed by the big and small Vistula Rivers near Thorn, West Prussia.

Her parents were David and Eva Adrian Dirks. She was the second of eight children and is the last survivor of the Dirks family. She died at 4:00 p. m. Nov. 21, 1957, at the home of her daughter Frieda, Mrs. John A. Bartel, at the age of 92 years, eight months and 16 days.

She received her education in a private school which was maintained by the six families who lived on the island.

She was baptized by her father upon professing Jesus Christ as her Savior, and became a member of the local Mennonite church. After she came to America she joined the Brudertal church near Hillsboro, Kan.

In July 1888 our father made a second trip back to Germany and mother and father were married on Sept. 6, 1888. The parents then came to the U.S. and settled on the farm of our grandfather, Rev. W. J. Ewert, Sr., which our father bought.

Our father died April 5, 1928, leaving mother a widow for over 29 years. She was the mother of seven children: Arnold of the home, Frieda, Mrs. J. A. Bartel of Hillsboro, Leo of Rock Springs Ranch, Samuel, who preceded her in death, Will, of Hutchinson, Elizabeth of the home, and Henry of Abilene, Kan.

Besides the children she leaves to mourn her departure one son-in-law, John A. Bartel; four daughters-in-law; Gertrude and Arthur Dirks, a niece and nephew who were taken into our home after the death of their parents; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

As a pioneer minister's wife she had ample opportunities to practice hospitality, which she always did unselfishly and cheerfully.

About a month before her death she was taken to the Salem Hospital because of flu and pneumonia. After a stay there of 11 days she was permitted to return to the home of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Bartel where, after about two weeks, the Lord called her to her heavenly rest.

Funeral services were conducted at the Brudertal church on Sunday, Nov. 24, 1957, at 2:00 p. m. with Rev. Walter P. Neufeld officiating. Interment was made at the Ebenezer Cemetery. — The Family.
