— Funeral services for Mrs. Jacob J. Schmidt, 74, who passed away June 2 at the Bethesda hospital in Goessel, were held Sunday afternoon at the Alexanderwohl church. Rev. P. A. Wedel officiated, assisted by Rev. H. B. Schmidt. Mrs. Schmidt, the former Lizzie Enns, has been a member of the Alexanderwohl church since 1897. She is survived by three sons, Menno E. of Newton, Jacob W. of Goessel and Elmer W. of Canton; one daughter, Mrs. Ben F. Voth of rural Newton; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Jacob J. Enns, and one sister, Mrs. Marie Unruh, of Goessel.

Mrs. Lizzie Enns Schmidt was born on Nov. 28, 1880, in Marion County, Kansas. She was the youngest daughter of the children of Jacob Enns and Maria Sommerfield Enns. She attended elementary school at Maple Hill in Marion county.

On June 6, 1897, she was baptized by Rev. Peter Balzer and accepted into the Alexanderwohl Mennonite church of which she remained a faithful member, although she was unable to attend services the past year because of ill health.

On Oct. 16, 1898, she was married to Jacob J. Schmidt. After their marriage they lived on a farm in McPherson county. To them were born four children, three sons and one daughter. In July 1919, an adopted daughter was taken into their home.

On February 4, 1938, her husband died after 39 years, three months and 19 days of married life. In 1940 she with her son Jacob moved to Goessel.

Since 1950 her health had failed. However, recently her health seemed to improve until Sunday evening, Mary 24, when she was stricken with a heart ailment which ended her life Thursday morning, June 2. She had reached the age of 74 years, six months and four days.

She is survived by the following children: Menno E. and his wife Esther, Jacob W., Elmer W. and his wife Linda, Mary and her husband Ben F. Voth, and the adopted daughter Esther and her husband Arthur Buller. She also leaves 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, one brother Jacob J. Enns of the Bethesda Home, and one sister, Mrs. Maria Unruh of Goessel, and other relatives and many friends. One sister and two brothers pre-deceased her.

Realizing the nature of her illness, mother expressed the wish that the Lord would not let her tarry long. Her prayer was that when at last she would reach the shores of Jordan, the Lord would be there to recive [sic] her into the heavenly Home.

Funeral services were held at the Bergen Funeral Home at Goessel, Kan. and at the Alexanderwohl church on June 5, 1955. Rev. P. A. Wedel, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. H. B. Schmidt, conducted the funeral service.
