Bertha S. Haury, Tochter von Daniel und Anna Strohm Haury, ward am 11 Mai 1879 geboren. Sie brachte ihre Jugendjahre bei Halstead, Kansas zu und besuchte da die Volksschule und im Sommer die Gemeindeschule. Von Aelt. Chr. Krehbiel getauft, ward sie als Glied der Halstead Mennonitengemeinde aufgenommen und blieb da Glied. Sie besaß eine heitere und frohe Natur. Im Alter von 21 Jahren ward sie nach zweijährigem Studium in Bethel College krank, und ihre Krankheit band sie 44 Jahre lang unter schwerem Leiden an ihr Lager. Trotzdem bekundete sie ein merkwürdig reges Interesse an allen kirchlichen Vorgängen. Es überleben sie 4 Brüder: Dr. R. S. Haury, Newton; Albert P. Haury, Hutchinson; Carl F. Haury, Halstead; Dr. Paul G. Haury, Lewiston, Idaho, z.Z. in einem Armee Hospital in New Guinea; 4 Schwestern: Frau Stella Rupp, Moundridge; Frau Ella Langenwalter, Gulfport, Miss.; Frl. Laura und Frl. Irma Haury, Halstead. Alle fühlten mit und standen der Heimgerufenen in dem langwährenden Leiden bei; besonders Frl. Laura weihte ihre ganze Zeit und Kraft in hingebender Liebe der kranken Schwester in deren zunehmenden Hilflosigkeit. Die Begräbnisfeier fand am 12. Januar in der Mennonitenkirche in Halstead statt. Nach kurzer Andacht im Heim dienten in der Kirche die Predigerbrüder D. C. Wedel und J. H. Langenwalter und ein Quartet diente mit passenden Liedern. Begraben wurden die sterblichen Reste im Halstead Friedhof, wo Pred. H. T. Unruh fungierte.

— Miss Bertha Haury, who has suffered from ill health for over 40 years, died at her home in Halstead early Tuesday morning. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Haury of Halstead and a sister of Miss Irma Haury, a teacher in Lincoln school here, of Dr. R. S. Haury of Newton, and Miss Laura Haury of the home in Halstead, where she was tenderly cared for until the time of her death. She was 65 years of age. Funeral services will be held Friday at the Halstead Mennonite church of which she was a member.

— The funeral service for Miss Bertha S. Haury last Friday afternoon at the First Mennonite church of Halstead was one of the larges held there in many months. it was conducted by Rev. D. C. Wedel, Dr. J. H. Langenwalter, North Newton, and Rev. H. T. Unruh, Hillsboro. Both of the latter two were formerly minsters at Halstead. In spite of having been an invalid for over 50 years, Miss Haury's life was an inspiration to many and she had a large circle of friends. Brothers and sisters surviving are Dr. R. S. Haury, Newton; Albert Haury, Hutchison; Carl Haury, Halstead, Dr. Paul Haury, Lewiston, Idaho; Mrs. Stella Rupp, Moundridge; Mrs. Ella Langenwalter, Gulfport, Miss., and the Misses Irma and Laura Haury of the home.

BERTHA S. HAURY

Bertha S. Haury was born May 11, 1879. Her parents were Daniel and Anna Strohm Haury. She spent her childhood and youth at the parental home near Halstead. She attended the public schools and the summer sessions of the parochial school maintained by the First Mennonite church and joined the membership of this church through baptism administered by Rev. Christian Krehbiel. She had a vivacious spirit.

The expression of her Christian testimony was changed but not stopped by the face that she became seriously ill at the age of 21 while a student at Bethel College, where she had attended for two years. She suffered much during the following 44 years. Bertha faced the limitations place upon her life in the spirit of Micah 6:8, "He hath showed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord required of thee, but to do justly, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with thy God?" She developed a keen interest in and acquired a wide knowledge of the finer and greater things of life and inspired many toward more wholesome thinking and living.

She learned the value of the following words, addressed, an aged leader to youth facing great responsibility, opportunities, during the years of her youth: "The eternal God is they dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms. . . . And as they days so shall they strength be." Deuteronomy 33:27a and 25 b.

Four brothers: Dr. Richard S. Haury of Newton; Albert P., of Hutchinson; Carl F., of Halstead, and Dr. Paul G. Haury of Lewiston, Idaho, now on the surgical staff of an army hospital in New Guinea, and four sisters: Mrs. Stella Rupp of Moundridge; Mrs. Ella Langenwalter of Gulfport, Miss., and Misses Laura and Irma Haury of the home, remain of the father's family. All of these have felt with her during the long years of her suffering and have stood by her. this is especially ture [sic] of Laura who devoted her life to the welfare of her increasingly helpless sister.

Services were conducted from the First Mennonite church of Halstead on Friday afternoon, January 12, at 2:30 o'clock. A prayer service in the home preceded the church service. Rev. D. C. Wedel, pastor of the church was in charge of the service with Dr. J. H.Langenwalter assisting him. A quartet of Miss Elizabeth Huebert, Mrs. Richard Regier, A. C. Dettweiler and Walter Dettweiler sang: "Beneath the Cross of Jesus" and "Rock of Ages." Alma Ruth was at the organ and Ruth Rose was pianist.

Burial was in the Halstead cemetery with Rev. H. T. Unruh, a former pastor at Halstead, in charge of the committal service. Casket bearers were: Donald Haury, Orville Haury, C. D. Roper, Harold Regier, Carl Rupp, and Marvin Goering. Funeral arrangement were under the direction of Kaufman and Dreese.
