August Schmidt, 85, of Newton died Apr. 20 at Bethel Deaconess Hospital. Services were held Apr. 24 at Faith Mennonite Church with Leonard Wiebe officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. He was born Dec. 26, 1896 at Goessel to Peter P. and Anna Friesen Schmidt. He married Esther K. Schmidt on Aug. 8, 1896 at Pawnee Rock. He taught at Oklahoma Bible Academy, Meno, for 25 years and worked for nine years in Indian missions at Canton, Okla. He also served as a minister at churches in Kansas and Oklahoma. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Eleanor Ruth (Mrs. Bennet) Nickel of Newton; four sons, Richard Arthur of Lincoln, Robert Wayne and Wilbur Lloyd, both of Newton, and James Allen of Oklahoma City; four sisters, Sara Ensz of Reedley, Calif., Anna Thiessen of Buhler, Mary Martens of Newton and Justine Bogema of Kalamazoo, Mich.; two brothers, Rudolph of Buhler and Theodore of Newton; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald August; two sisters and one brother.
