A companion, Elmer L. Schwartz, 17, also went under but came to the surface and was rescued by Victor and John Lengacher, who were in a boat. Amos Graber had also started to wade across the stream when the other two went under.

INDIANA YOUTH DROWNS WHILE WADING IN RIVER

Grabill, Ind. — An attempt of three youths to wade across the St Joseph river near here on June 12 ended tragically when Laverne Graber, 21, son of Victor Grabers, lost his footing in deep water and drowned.

A companion, Elmer L. Schwartz, 17, also went under but came to the surface and was rescued by Victor and John Lengacher, who were in a boat. Amos Graber had also started to wade across the stream when the other two went under.

The river, which borders the Victor Graber farm, was about six feet deep.
