A long-time Newton resident and retired custodian for the Solomon public schools, he died on March 2 at Friendly Acres Home for the Aged. Survivors include his wife, the former Anna Esther Buller; two sons, James of Halstead and Herman, Jr., of Minden, Neb.; one daughter, Frances Krueger of Ft. Worth. Texas; three brothers, Elmer, Henry and Harry Hanke, all of Newton; two sisters, Edith Hanke of Newton and Esther Dirksen of Iron Mountain, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son.
