Near Berne, Ind., John von Gunten sr. died Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 21, after an illness of less than two days with congestion of the bowels and heart trouble. On Monday he was working on the pike northeast of Berne of which he was supervisor. Toward evening he quite suddenly became ill and his condition grew worse very rapidly until his death. John von Gunten, age 54 years, 11 months and 14 days, was born in Canton Bern, Switzerland, October 7, 1849. In November, 1872, he was married to Barbara Lehman with whom he emigrated to America the following year and settled on his present farm east of Berne. Nine children, five sons and four daughters, were born to them and all survive him. The deceased was a loyal member of the Mennonite church and an earnest church and Sunday-school worker. Funeral services were held on the 23d at the Mennonite church, J. W. Kliewer officiating.
