The fiery crash of a car and a semi-trailer last Friday evening on US-81 a mile north of Zimmerdale, between Newton and Hesston, claimed the lives of two Newton women. | |||
Dead are Mrs. Orval A. Bair, 58, and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Duane David Bair, 25, the former Kathleen Schroeder of the Goessel community and mother of two small children. Duane Bair had undergone minor surgery at Axtell Christian Hospital here Friday morning. | |||
Officers reported that a blowout of the left front tire of the northbound truck caused it to veer into the other lane of traffic, where it was hit by the southbound Bair auto. The car and the truck cab were both destroyed by fire. The truck driver was able to escape, and was brought to Bethel Deaconess Hospital suffering from shock. A car driven by James Ray Unruh, 27, of Hesston, traveling behind the Bairs, also hit the truck and he suffered a scalp laceration and cuts. | |||
Combined services for the two women were held Tuesday afternoon at the First United Presbyterian Church in Newton of which Mrs. Orval Bair, a widow, was a member. Rev. Louis L. Dale and Rev. Arnold Funk officiated. Mrs. Duane Bair was a member of the Alexanderwohl Church, and burial was made in the church cemetery. Besides her husband she leaves two children, Trenton, 4, and Jodie, 2; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Schroeder of rural Canton; two brothers, Donald J. of Moundridge and Robert J. of McPherson; and a sister, Mrs. Kenneth Wedel of Wichita. | |||

Kathleen Ann Schroeder Bair, daughter of John A. and Bertha Schroeder, was born. 22, 1946 at Goessel, Kan. and together with her mother-in-law, Mrs. Rebecca Bair, died in a car accident near Zimmerdale, Kan. on June 23, 1972 at the age of 25 years. | |||
She received her elementary education in the local elementary schools and graduated from the Goessel High School in May of 1964. | |||
She was brought up in the larger fellowship of the Alexanderwohl Mennonite Church and upon completing her catechetical instruction, she was baptized May 21, 1961 by Rev. John Thiessen and received as a member of this church. | |||
On April 3, 1966 she was married to Duane D. Bair. This union was blessed with two children. | |||
After living at home with her parents while her husband was in the service, she moved to California to join him there upon his discharge, returning to Newton, Kan. in 1968. Here she with her husband and child established their home and became active in the First Presbyterian Church of which Duane is a member. | |||
Her friendly, outgoing disposition made her loved by neighbors and friends. Hopeful for the future, strong in her faith in the goodness and providence of God, she faced both adversity and prosperity with confidence in the strong in her faith in the goodmercy of God. | |||
She leaves to mourn her husband; two children, Jodie Suzanne, 4, and Trenton Shawn, one; her parents; two brothers, Don and wife Maris Schroeder, and Bob and wife Gladys Schroeder; one sister, Carolyn and husband Ken Wedel, and many relatives and friends. — The Family. | |||
