PETER J. SCHMIDT
Peter J. Schmidt, son of Jacob J. and Caroline (Buller) Schmidt, was born on Nov. 10, 1889, in Hutchinson county, near Dolton, S. D. he went on to glory on Nov. 24, 1971 in the Freeman Community Hospital, reaching the age of 82 years an 14 day.
He realized his lost condition in the month of March 1907. He gave his life to Jesus and the precious blood of the Lamb cleansed him from all unrighteousness. Not only was his sin washed away, but a great new hope filled his life as he walked with the Lord. The Christian traits characterized his life for the Master.
In September 1907 he was baptized upon confession of his faith in Christ by Elder H. I. Dick, and was received into the membership of the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church of Marion. Here he remained faithful and active until the Lord called him home. He always appreciated his spiritual relationship to the Lord and the fellowship of saints in the House of God.
On Oct. 5, 1913, he was united in marriage to Helena Berg, who was called to be with the Lord on March 18, 1950. To this union five children were born: Arthur, Albena, Hulda, Ruben [sic Rueben], and Harvey.
On Aug. 24, 1952, he was united in marriage to Anna J. Unruh. They had the privilege of spending 19 years and three months together. These years were filled with joy, but most certainly sorrow became their lot.
He enjoyed good health until 1966, when he suffered a stroke while in Mountain Lake, Minn. Since that time, his health had steadily been failing, yet he remained happy in the Lord.
He is survived by his wife, Anna; three sons, Arthur and wife Evangeline of Dolton, Ruben [sic Rueben] and wife Eileen, and Harvey and wife Yvonne of Freeman; one daughter Hulda and husband Alvin Becker of Marion; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, as well as four brothers and three sisters.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lena; one daughter, Albena, who was married to Henry H. Unruh; three grandchildren; one brother and one sister.
We sorrow yet rejoice in the home going of our beloved. Our sorrow is not without hope. "Mark the perfect man and behold the upright; for the end of that man is peace."
The memorial service was held at the Marion E.M.B. on Nov. 27, with Rev. Eldin Classen officiating. Interment was made in the Schartner Cemetery. — The Family.
