– Mrs. Ben A. Smith, 72 of Route 1, Newton, died Sunday at Axtell Christian Hospital. She was a member of the First Mennonite Church, where the funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m Thursday with Rev. Robert Suderman in charge. Mrs. Smith was the former Caroline Thomas of Ringwood, Okla. She married Mr. Smith there in 1917, and they moved to this community 20 years ago. Surviving in addition to her husband are eight sons, Frank of Newton, Melvin of Loveland, Colo., John of Colorado Springs, Leroy of Walton, Ben W. Jr., a missionary in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Will of Omaha, Neb., Aaron and LaVern, both serving in the West Indies; two daughters, Mrs. Ted (Melinda) Veer, missionary in Addis Ababa, and Mrs. Melvin (Lois) Flaming of Dallas, Texas; two brothers, C. J. and Henry J. Thomas of Ringwood; one sister, Mrs. H. J. Unruh of Jasper, Mo.; 34 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
