Served in India, Tanganyika
Goshen, Ind. — Dr. Lillie Shenk Kaufman, 71, former medical missionary in India and East Africa, died Feb. 13 at Elkhart General Hospital. Death was due to complications following surgery which she underwent at the hospital the day before.
She was a member of the College Mennonite Church where funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 16, with Rev. John H. Moseman, pastor, and Rev. J. D. Graber officiating.
The former Lillie Shenk of Elida, Ohio, Dr. Kaufman attended Goshen College and received her doctor of medicine degree from the Woman's Medical College in Philadelphia. She practiced for four years at Laurelton State Village in Pennsylvania, and then entered overseas service under the Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities. She served for seven years in India and Tanganyika, now Tanzania.
Upon returning from Africa, she practiced for 18 years in the Fisher and Morton communities in Illinois. In 1941 at Foosland, Ill., she was married to Rev. J. Norman Kaufman, also a former missionary to India. They moved to Goshen in 1959, and Mrs. Kaufman had a medical practice here for five years before retiring. Rev. Kaufman died here in 1966.
Dr. Kaufman was a resident of Greencroft Villa.
Survivors include two step-sons, Paul Kaufman of Orrville, Ohio, and Russel Kaufman of Albany, Ore.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Charles (Lydia) Shank, her twin, and Mrs. Ira (Elsie) Stoltzfus, both of Goshen, and Mrs. Edith Atchison of Harrisonburg, Va.; and one brother, Rev. Ezra W. Shenk, administrator of the Shenk nursing Home at Wellman, Iowa.
