FORMER 'MONITOR' EDITOR DIES SUDDENLY

Harrisonburg, Va. — John L. Horst, instructor of Home Bible Studies for The Mennonite Hour and former editor of The Christian Monitor, died of a coronary shortly after being admitted to Rockingham Memorial Hospital, Tuesday morning, Nov. 24.

He had attended the morning devotional period at Mennonite Broadcast, Inc. offices when he was stricken. He was 75.

Services for Bible Teacher, Retired Editor Held at EMC

Harrisonburg, Va.— John L. Horst of Park View, instructor of Home Bible Studies for The Mennonite Hour and retired editor of church publications, died of a coronary attack on Nov. 24. He had celebrated his 75th birthday on Nov. 9.

Funeral services were conducted to the chapel of Eastern Mennonite College on Friday afternoon, Nov. 27.

As instructor of Home Bible Studies, a retirement vocation he had accepted in August 1957, Rev. Horst had counseled by correspondence over 20,000 Bible students in all walks of life in the U. S., Canada, Jamaica, and Africa.

Actively serving the Mennonite Church for most of his life, Rev. Horst went from farm to printshop in 1920. Joining the Mennonite Publishing House at Scottdale, Pa. as a linotype operator, he moved through production departments to become editor in 1929 of the ”Christian Monitor,” which post he served until his retirement in 1953.

In addition, Rev. Horst served as editor of the tract department, and as assistant editor of the Gospel Herald, official publication of the Mennonite Church. He also edited a monthly periodical, The Way, The Mennonite Yearbook, The Family Almanac, The Alleghany [sic Allegheny] Mennonite Conference News, as well as a number of books.

Rev. Horst served for many years as bishop and pastor of the Scottdale Mennonite Church, and was bishop of the Mennonite churches in Meyersdale, Pa. and Cumberland, Md.

Born in Chambersburg, Pa. , Nov. 9, 1889. Rev. Horst is survived by his wife Emma, and children, John L. , Jr., on the faculty of Eastern Mennonite College, and Rachel (Mrs. James Witmer) of Charlottesville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorial contributions be sent to Home Bible Studies, c/o The Mennonite Hour, Harrisonburg, Va.
