Father of Seven Dies In Orchard Accident At Bird-in-Hand, Pa.
Lancaster, Pa. — More than 800 persons filled the main auditorium and basement of the Weavertown Amish Mennonite Church on May 16 for the funeral of Sylvan L. Kauffman, 40, father of seven children who was killed in an orchard accident several days earlier.
Mr. Kauffman, associated with his father in the A. L. Kauffman and Sons fruit farm near Bird-in-Hand, apparently was run over by the wheel of a large tank sprayer. It is believed he started up the tractor attacked to the sprayer, not knowing it was in gear. He was caught between the tank and a nearby building.
The oldest son of the Kauffman family graduates this year from Lancaster Mennonite School, while the youngest child is two years of age. Surviving in addition to the children and his wife, the former Elsie Glick, are the parents and brothers and sisters.
